Virginia Gives $3,550 Speeding Ticket

The drivers most bothered by speeders tend to be old people, the same old people who make the laws. In Virginia, speeders now face additional taxes that are tacked on to the initial fine that can make a speeding ticket cost in excess of $3,500. (MSN)

As of the beginning of July, dozens of traffic offenses in Virginia now come attached with “civil remedial fees,” which should not be confused with the remedial courses taken in high school by those enacting this law. According to the new penalties, a driver convicted of reckless driving, which for unknown reasons includes going 75mph in a 55mph zone, faces a $350 per year tax in addition to the fine, which on its own can be up to $2,500. The law also forbids judges from waiving or reducing the fine or from using any judgment whatsoever.

Most of the fees are much larger than the fines themselves. For disobeying an officer’s order to pull into a weigh station the fine is merely $35, plus a $61 court processing fee. The “civil remedial fee,” however, would be $900 over the next three years.

Other examples include drunk driving, which on top of fines, court costs, and legal fees carries a “remedial fee” of $1,000/year for three years, and not having insurance, for which the tax on top of the fine is $300/year for three years. And be careful with any type of vehicular manslaughter, whether it be involuntary, alcohol-related, or aggravated, all three carry additional fees of $1000 per year for three years; feeling remorse for accidentally killing someone is at the judge’s discretion.

The main reason this “driver responsibility program” has been enacted is because the state needs the money. “In fact, Virginia added a fee rather than increase fines because it wanted the money to improve its roads, and revenue from fines must go to public schools.” (MSN) They’re expected to raise $200 million per year, nearly the same amount that one of their premiere dogfighting entrepreneurs was getting from his contract with the Falcons.

“Do we think it’s a bit excessive?” Said a member of Virginia’s state legislature, “well that’s not really for us to decide, we just make the laws.”
