Muslim Father Murders Daughter in 'Honor Killing' for Being in Love
[Although I (Plagman) am writing this, it is not meant to be funny. It is true, and the quotes are real. This story is disgusting, and anyone who isn’t horrified, well, you know where you can stick it and where you can go.]
Banaz Mahmod, a 20 year old woman who had moved to England with her family at the age of 11, was strangled by her father with a boot lace and then buried in a suitcase in their back garden.
Banaz’s father, Mahmod Mahmod, planned the killing with his brother, Ari Mahmod, during a family meeting. They, along with two others, have pled guilty; another two who were involved fled the country.
The men were accusing Banaz of disgracing their family after she ended an abusive marriage that the family had arranged, for becoming too westernized, and for falling in love with a man who was not from their Iraqi village.
Currently, England is home to 1.8 million Muslims, and Banaz’s murder is the most recent in a horrifying trend of so-called “honor killings.” Over the last decade, more than 25 women in Britain have been killed by their Muslim relatives for “shameful” offenses, and more than 100 other homicides are under investigation for suspicion of also being ‘honor killings.’
Diana Nammi of the London-based Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organization, said, “We’re seeing an increase around the world, due in part to the rise in Islamic fundamentalism.” Some Muslim communities in England practice Sharia law, or strict Islamic law.
At a young age, Banaz’s father had begun beating her for using hair spray, which apparently was viewed as a step towards westernization (in the eyes of the father who moved his family westward out of the Middle East). According to Banaz’s sister, their uncle had warned Banaz that if she were his daughter and had shamed the family by becoming involved with the Iranian Kurd, she already would have been “turned to ashes.”
Not surprisingly, Banaz ran away from home as a teen, but was forced to return when her father sent her an audio message threatening to kill her sisters, her mother, and himself if she did not return.
After returning home, Banaz had to be hospitalized after her brother attacked her with orders from her father to kill her, which, possessing only 60% of his father’s psychosis and insanity, he was unable to do in the end.
To make matters worse, police constantly dismissed Banaz’s pleas for help. Her first attempt at getting help came in the form of a letter to the police, naming the men who she thought were going to kill her; she sent the letter after suspecting that her uncle was trying to kill her and her boyfriend.
Weeks later, her father lured her to her grandmother’s home and forced Banaz to chug brandy and then approached her wearing gloves. Fearing for her life, she escaped by breaking a window and was later treated at a hospital. Rather than take action, the police dismissed her claims, and even thought about charging her with damages for breaking the window. As she lay in the hospital, Banaz’s boyfriend helped her to record a video message documenting her fear, thinking it might her last chance to do so.
After being released, she tried to convince her family she was no longer seeing her boyfriend, but friends spotted her with him and told her family.
Soon after this occurred, a group of men tried to lure her boyfriend into a car, but not being a complete moron, he refused. Banaz then went to the police one more time. They finally listened, and tried to persuade her to stay in a safe house. Banaz refused thinking her mother would provide sufficient protection.
The next day, the parents left her alone in the house. The boyfriend, suspicious after not receiving any text messages, alerted the police. Her body was found three months later after police tracked phone records.
After being asked for comment on this story, Samuel L. Jackson was quoted as saying, “yes I believe [those responsible for murdering Banaz] deserve to die, and I hope they burn in hell!”
(okay, everything is true except for the last sentence; nevertheless, they do deserve to die, and I hope they burn in hell)
